A lovely story. We did get our daughter an EZ-Bake oven and I tend to think it was a lesson in how disappointing things can be relative to your expectations. The cakes were leaden and too often stuck to the pan no matter how carefully you greased them and what recipe you used. She did grow up fearless in the kitchen, though, so maybe it was a win.

I'm one of eight kids, with three of them being older sisters, so not only did we girls have to help out with meal chores, there happily came the time when the four of us were old enough to bake cookies and cakes by ourselves, usually on Saturdays.

Yet the allure of an EZ Bake Oven must have been there, for we did have one eventually. One of my older sisters had gotten it, but my mom insisted that the tiny cakes had to be split evenly between the four of us. Thus, we each got hardly more than a bite. We got bigger slices when "real" cake was made, plus it was tastier too.

Your toy oven gift, though, looks a lot cuter than our EZ Oven did.

Loved reading this, Amy. I really like the lesson your parents taught you about how love is not measured by objects. ❤️
