Amy thanks for your notes as always. I have been watching Timothy Snyder's YouTube lectures on the history of Ukraine from a class he gave at Yale a couple of years ago. This crisis with SNAP (and other things around this shut down) remind me of Snyder's discussion around the famine in Ukraine in the 1930s. Politicians rationalized millions of peasants starving as necessary because that was the way it had to happen (they did not have to take all the food...they exported some of it!). Speaker Johnson's remarks today sounded just like that...cannot stray the course so people will go hungry!! Hopefully this will not last forever!
Terry, I hadn't thought of this heartbreaking and horrible parallel! Thank you for reminding me of the Holodomor. When I first read about it, I had the typical 'what kind of monsters do this' feeling? Now I know what kind of monsters.
@Terry, I’d love to recommend Red Famine by Anne Applebaum, a 2017 historical investigation into Stalin’s intentional starvation of millions of Ukrainians. Brilliantly researched and written and one of the most bone chilling accounts of atrocity imagined. Fabulous read on such an important topic.
Oh, me too. I've been reading about this from so many perspectives, and I didn't want to cover my experiences. But this is so catastrophic I had to join the awful chorus.
Many legal immigrants were arrested by ICE two blocks from where I live in Soho.
They have been working legally on Canal Street for 15-20 years and barely make enough money to buy food for their families. Who knows where they are now. No one. The people that weren't arrested are afraid to come back to sell their wares. I am sure they rely on SNAP and WIC
I remember reading The Lottery in high school. I has stayed with me.
People in my community are scared to leave their homes. In a nearby community a woman was abducted by ICE who was an American citizen. It happened in front of city hall.
How can people get food if they are afraid to leave their homes? Many rely on SNAP, WIC and food pantries. It hurts.

Thank you, Lori! I'll put it on my list, too.
I love what you have written, but I am so sorry that you had to write it.

Wonderful essay Amy.

Terrible times.
Somehow, reading Dear Bread makes me feel better.
Thank you,
Suan Anthony
Thank you Susan for reading and telling me about these people. What an ugly, ugly time in America. What a rough world we have.

Thank you for reading and sharing Ellen. It really does hurt.
